Makati City Takes Down ‘Gil Tulog’ Signs!

Makati City has swiftly removed controversial “Gil Tulog Avenue” signs that replaced the iconic Gil Puyat Avenue street markers, following backlash from the public and the family of the late Senate President Gil Puyat.

Mayor Abby Binay issued a public apology on Friday, acknowledging the oversight and explaining that the campaign, intended as a marketing stunt, bypassed her office. “If it had come to me, it would have been rejected outright,” she said, criticizing the city officials responsible for approving the campaign for lacking foresight and respect.

The city also faced criticism after “Gil Tulog” signs—promoting a melatonin brand—started circulating on social media, with the granddaughter of Gil Puyat, Erika Puyat Lontok, expressing outrage. She called the campaign “disrespectful” for tarnishing her grandfather’s legacy in an effort to sell sleep aids.

In response, the company behind the campaign, Wellspring, issued an apology, saying it never intended to offend or disrespect the Puyat family. “It was a misguided attempt to highlight the importance of sleep,” the company said, vowing to be more sensitive in future campaigns.

With the signs now removed, Mayor Binay reaffirmed her commitment to preserving the memory and respect for the late Senate president.
