Marine biodiversity experts are urging Congress to pass a bill designating Panaon Island in Southern Leyte as a “protected seascape” to shield it from ongoing threats.
The bill has passed the House of Representatives and awaits action in the Senate, where 11 similar bills are currently pending.
Pintuyan Mayor Ricarte Estrella expressed hope for its approval, noting it would bolster local management and conservation efforts.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ commitment to the 30×30 global conservation pledge supports the protection of marine biodiversity.
Experts emphasize that swift approval is essential for effective stewardship, law enforcement, and community involvement, particularly after Typhoon Odette and illegal fishing have damaged the island’s coral reefs.
