LEGARDA HIGHLIGHTS LIVELIHOOD CHALLENGES IN REVIVING PHILIPPINE WEAVING

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) recently opened the Philippine Handloom Weaving Center to support the revitalization of the local weaving industry and provide livelihood opportunities for Filipino weavers.

Senator Loren Legarda expressed concern over the lack of progress on her bill to develop the industry, emphasizing that weaving sustains farmers and communities beyond fashion.

The center features innovative weaving technologies designed to modernize the craft and assist marginalized groups like persons with disabilities and senior citizens.

DOST’s efforts have already helped indigenous groups such as the Buhid tribe, renewing youth interest in traditional weaving.

Meanwhile, Legarda and Senator Risa Hontiveros are pushing for the Blue Economy Act to promote the sustainable use of marine resources while protecting coastal livelihoods.
