LAST-MINUTE CANDIDATE INFLUX ANTICIPATED BY COMELEC AHEAD OF COC FILING DEADLINE

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is preparing for a surge of candidates as the filing period for certificates of candidacy (COCs) comes to a close on Monday and Tuesday.

Comelec chairperson George Garcia noted that candidates can submit their COCs and certificates of nomination – certificate of acceptance (CON-CAN) even after the 5 p.m. deadline, provided they are already at the venue.

On Sunday, eight new senatorial aspirants filed their COCs, raising the total to 78 since the filing period began on October 1.

Among those who filed were administration bets Erwin Tulfo and Senator Pia Cayetano, who arrived at the venue on a bicycle to promote her health and environmental initiatives.

Additionally, four party-list groups submitted their CON-CAN, bringing the total to 87 organizations vying for at least one seat in Congress.
