The Government of Japan is providing a ¥370 million (around PHP137 million) grant to strengthen the Philippines’ tuberculosis (TB) response, focusing on remote and underserved areas.
Japanese Ambassador Kazuya Endo and UNOPS Geneva Office Director Andrew Kirkwood signed the agreement for “The Project for Enhancing Tuberculosis Screening in Remote Areas,” witnessed by Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa.
The initiative will deploy 20 ultraportable X-ray units with computer-aided diagnosis technology to provincial health offices to improve early TB detection and treatment.
The Philippines is considered a high-burden TB country, with an estimated 739,000 cases reported in 2023.
The project will be implemented by the Stop TB Partnership under UNOPS, in close coordination with the Department of Health, building on over 30 years of Japan-Philippines cooperation in public health.
