Human rights lawyer Chel Diokno officially joined the Akbayan Party on Tuesday, taking his oath in a ceremony led by Senator Risa Hontiveros.
Diokno, who plans to run for a senatorial position in the 2025 midterm elections, expressed gratitude for the party’s support and the opportunity to further his human rights advocacy.
Hontiveros noted that Diokno’s father, former senator Jose “Ka Pepe” Diokno, partly inspired Akbayan’s founding 26 years ago.
Diokno, who is also chairperson of the Free Legal Assistance Group, is a vocal critic of the Duterte administration’s war on drugs.
Akbayan President Rafaela David highlighted the party’s goal to bolster the opposition in the Senate and support key figures like Diokno, Bam Aquino, and Kiko Pangilinan in the upcoming elections.
