HOUSE APPROVES BILL DECLARING ELECTION DAY A REGULAR HOLIDAY

The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading House Bill No. 8392, which seeks to declare every national election day a regular non-working holiday to encourage greater voter participation.

233-0 with one abstention, lawmakers backed the measure that covers national elections, plebiscites, referenda, recall polls, and other nationwide voting exercises through an amendment to the Administrative Code of 1987.

Ferdinand Alexander Marcos, one of the bill’s authors, said the proposal aims to give Filipinos more time to vote without work-related pressures.

Supporters of the measure believe declaring Election Day a holiday would strengthen democratic participation and improve voter turnout across the country.

The bill now moves forward in the legislative process for further deliberation and possible enactment into law.
