Former Manila mayor and Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza stated that changing the commemoration date of former senator Benigno Aquino Jr.’s assassination from August 21 to August 23 does not diminish the significance of his sacrifice and patriotism.
Atienza emphasized the importance of remembering August 21, the day of Aquino’s assassination in 1983, and its connection to the 1971 Plaza Miranda bombing.
He noted that the bombing, which killed nine and injured 95, was carried out by the New People’s Army (NPA).
Atienza urged Filipinos to honor Aquino’s heroism and the pivotal role his death played in the country’s history.
The date change was made by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for “holiday economics,” creating a four-day weekend.
