Cardiovascular diseases, especially heart attacks, have become the leading cause of death among persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) reported.
Since 2022, heart disease has overtaken tuberculosis as the top cause of mortality in prison facilities.
From 2022 to 2025, 445 PDLs died from acute myocardial infarction, followed by pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses.
BuCor’s Health and Welfare Services director, CT/CSupt. Ma. Cecilia V. Villanueva noted that tuberculosis remains a serious concern due to overcrowding and poor ventilation, but is being actively managed through partnerships and programs.
One successful initiative, Active Case Finding, was recognized in 2023 for significantly improving TB case detection and notification.
