House lawmakers filed a bill seeking to declare February 25 as EDSA People Power Day, making it a regular holiday to honor the historic 1986 revolution.
Akbayan Representatives Chel Diokno, Perci Cendaña, Dadah Kiram Ismula, and Dinagat Islands Rep. Kaka Bag-ao filed House Bill 7911 on Monday to preserve the historical truth and commemorate the collective courage of Filipinos.
The bill mandates the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), in coordination with relevant agencies, to organize educational and commemorative activities highlighting democratic values and human rights awareness.
Funding for the observance will initially come from NHCP appropriations, with future allocations included in the annual national budget law.
If enacted, EDSA People Power Day will be celebrated yearly, providing schools, government agencies, and civil society the opportunity to honor the legacy of the peaceful revolution.
