The 2025 budget for the Free Wi-Fi for All program has tripled to PHP7.5 billion, allowing for the creation of up to 50,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country, especially in remote and disadvantaged areas.
Rep. Luis Campos Jr. emphasized that the expansion would improve access to online learning, government services, and job opportunities for Filipinos in rural areas.
He also advocated for the passage of House Bill 10215, which seeks to classify high-speed internet as a basic service, allowing the National Telecommunications Commission to impose minimum mobile speed targets on telecommunications companies.
Campos stressed the need for faster mobile internet speeds to increase productivity and reduce losses caused by slow connections.
According to the December 2024 Global Speedtest Index, the Philippines’ mobile internet speed lags behind other Southeast Asian countries.
