Senator Sherwin Gatchalian defended the Senate’s decision to grant Philippine citizenship to Chinese businessman Li Duan Wang, stating that he met all legal requirements and had no derogatory records.
He emphasized that the Senate conducted independent background checks, and consulting agencies like the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, National Security Council, and Interpol.
Senator JV Ejercito supported the decision, noting that Wang had been living in the Philippines for years, with his children studying in exclusive Chinese-Filipino schools and his businesses operating legally.
However, Senator Risa Hontiveros opposed the measure, citing Wang’s alleged ties to offshore gaming operators and potential links to China’s United Front Work Department.
Despite her concerns, the Senate approved Wang’s naturalization with 19 votes in favor, one against, and zero abstentions.
