Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin defended the Ayuda Para sa Kapos ang Kita (AKAP) program, saying criticism against it stems from “crab mentality” despite its good intentions and stringent screening process.
The program provides one-time cash grants to low-income earners affected by calamities such as recent storms and floods.
Garin emphasized that the aid targets those who work but earn below P23,000, and that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) strictly manages the distribution to prevent misuse.
The program was expanded to cover 42 congressional districts hit by recent heavy rains, with a P360 million fund allocated for cash grants, food packs, and relief.
Garin called on lawmakers and officials to collaborate in supporting vulnerable workers and dismissed claims that the program is politicized, asserting it benefits many Filipinos during times of crisis.
