FIRST LADY CALLS FOR SUSTAINED PASIG RIVER REHABILITATION

First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos is pushing for the Pasig River rehabilitation to go beyond waterway cleanup, focusing also on creating public spaces, reconnecting communities, and making the river a place for Filipinos to enjoy.

She said more work is needed as the government continues the rehabilitation project, which aims to transform the river into a center for tourism, economic activity, and transportation.

The initiative includes the development of the Pasig River Esplanade, where people can walk, bike, and spend time by the river.

Araneta-Marcos has also helped secure international support, including a $20-million donation from the UAE for efforts to address waste pollution and create opportunities for riverside communities.

The rehabilitation program was further strengthened in 2025 with the creation of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Pasig River Rehabilitation to oversee the river’s restoration.
