Filipino peace negotiator and University of the Philippines professor Miriam Coronel-Ferrer has been honored with the 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Award, recognized for her contributions to reduced inequalities, peace, and sustainable development.
Coronel-Ferrer, noted for her advocacy of inclusivity and women’s roles in peacebuilding, has been active since the late 1970s as a student activist and later as a senior mediation adviser at the United Nations.
The Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation praised her non-violent approach to peace and her dedication to harnessing women’s power in creating a just world.
The 2023 awards also recognized Korvi Rakshand of Bangladesh, Eugenio Lemos of Timor-Leste, and Ravi Kannan of India for their work in education, sustainability, and healthcare, respectively.
Established in 1958, the Ramon Magsaysay Award is Asia’s premier honor.
