Filipino fishermen have accused the Chinese Coast Guard of compelling them to return shells they gathered from Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Scarborough Shoal.
In a video released by boat captain Joely Saligan, the fishermen were seen collecting shells for food on January 12 near the shoal’s south entrance before being forced to return a portion by the Chinese Coast Guard.
Saligan expressed frustration, stating they anticipated the outcome. Another video captured the moment the fishermen were chased away by CCG personnel.
The incident highlights tensions in the South China Sea, where recent clashes between Chinese and Philippine vessels prompted officials to call for increased dialogue.
China’s military drills in the region coincided with joint exercises by the United States and the Philippines, escalating a month of confrontations.
