Dr. Anthony Leachon cautioned the FDA against hastily approving the TAK003 dengue vaccine, emphasizing that it will not fully address the dengue outbreak.
He argued that the crisis stems from poor sanitation, climate change, and inadequate mosquito control rather than a lack of vaccines.
The warning follows Sen. Nancy Binay’s call for the vaccine’s approval, citing its use in over 40 countries.
Leachon also urged regulatory caution, referencing past safety concerns with Dengvaxia.
The DOH has recorded over 43,000 dengue cases this year, a 56% increase from 2023, with most cases in Calabarzon, NCR, and Central Luzon.
