Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero urged Philippine health and border authorities to keep Nipah virus preparedness systems fully active, despite the country being at low risk, citing recent outbreaks in neighboring Asian countries.
He stressed that public safety relies on continuous readiness, inter-agency coordination, and timely communication between the Department of Health, the Bureau of Quarantine, and local government units.
Escudero called for strict enforcement of border protocols, including thermal scanning, symptom monitoring, and clear guidance for arriving passengers, to prevent the entry and spread of high-risk pathogens.
He emphasized that lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic should guide current efforts, ensuring early detection, transparent reporting, and updated tools for frontline personnel.
The senator warned that proactive monitoring and synchronized systems are essential to safeguard the public against emerging health threats.
