The Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace (EDSA Shrine), the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto, and the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu have been elevated to national shrine status by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
The decision was made during the CBCP’s 129th plenary assembly held in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, with over 70 bishops in attendance.
The EDSA Shrine, built in 1989, commemorates the 1986 People Power Revolution and was a key site for the 2001 demonstrations.
The Loreto Shrine in Manila houses the image of Our Lady of Loreto, while the Aranzazu Shrine in San Mateo, Rizal, traces its history back to 1596.
National shrines are recognized for their historical, spiritual, or cultural significance, serving as pilgrimage sites and centers for exemplary worship, formation, and social services.
