DPWH BLAMES GARBAGE DISPOSAL FOR NCR FLOODING

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) attributed recent flooding in Metro Manila to overpopulation and improper garbage disposal, exacerbated by Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon.

Public Works Secretary Manual Bonoan stated that engineering interventions are being implemented, but garbage clogging waterways remains a significant issue.

Despite completing over 600 flood control projects, Metro Manila’s 14.9 million population has surpassed its carrying capacity, contributing to flooding problems.

Former PAGC Commissioner Nick Conti called for a comprehensive audit of flood control projects due to persistent flooding despite substantial budget allocations, citing potential inefficiencies and corruption.

Senate President Francis Escudero and House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan also raised concerns about the effectiveness of flood control measures and the allocation of disaster relief funds.
