DOJ: TEVES’ NEW PROCEEDINGS IN TIMOR-LESTE ARE UNLIKELY TO SUCCEED

The Department of Justice (DoJ) expressed confidence that former Negros Oriental lawmaker Arnolfo Teves Jr.’s latest legal challenge to his extradition from Timor-Leste will fail.

Teves is contesting his extradition on procedural grounds after a Timor-Leste court ruled for his return to the Philippines to face charges, including the murder of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.

The DoJ clarified that Teves was given due process, and his recent objections are an afterthought following an unfavorable outcome.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bringing Teves back to face justice.

Teves is currently facing multiple charges, including 10 counts of murder, and had fled to Timor-Leste, where his asylum request was denied.
