DOJ APPROVES MULTIPLE CHARGES AGAINST BALIGOD AND 18 ‘MALETA BOYS’

The Department of Justice (DOJ) approved the filing of multiple charges against lawyer Levito Baligod and the group known as the “18 maleta boys” following complaints involving sworn statements, media appearances, and online publications. The group will face 10 separate informations involving six counts of cyber libel and four counts of perjury, while Baligod will be charged as a co-accused in some cases and separately face one count of cyber libel. The DOJ said its decision was based on evidence gathered during the preliminary investigation showing probable basis for prosecution. Some other complaints were dismissed due to insufficient evidence to establish a reasonable certainty of conviction. Baligod said he plans to seek reconsideration of the DOJ’s ruling as the cases move forward in court.
