The Department of Health (DOH) has declared a national public health emergency following a 500% surge in HIV cases among Filipinos aged 15 to 25 between 2010 and 2023.
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa revealed that the country now averages 57 new HIV cases daily, with the youngest recorded patient being 12 years old.
The Philippines currently has the highest number of new HIV infections in the Western Pacific Region, with over 5,100 cases reported in the first quarter of 2024 alone.
Herbosa emphasized the need for a whole-of-society response and increased access to antiretroviral treatment and self-testing kits.
The most affected regions include Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Davao, and parts of the Visayas.
