DOE PROJECTS 10.7% SURGE IN PEAK POWER DEMAND BY 2027

The Department of Energy (DOE) expects the Philippines’ peak electricity demand to increase by 10.7 percent in 2027 as a potentially severe El Niño brings hotter weather and higher cooling needs.

Peak demand could reach 22,231 megawatts next year, up from 20,088 MW recorded earlier in 2026.

Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan said the country is expected to have sufficient electricity supply despite the projected increase in demand.

However, hydropower generation could decline by as much as 60 percent due to reduced water availability, while authorities are also assessing possible effects on solar and biomass facilities.

The DOE expects new power projects to help strengthen supply, while prioritizing measures to address electricity constraints in the Visayas.
