DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy issued a warning to candidates using illegal text-blasting machines or IMSI catchers during campaigns, vowing to monitor and file charges against violators.
The statement follows the arrest of a Malaysian in Parañaque City for selling the prohibited devices online.
Uy explained that IMSI catchers, which mimic cell towers to collect phone data, are often used for large-scale text blasts to reach voters, particularly during elections.
He emphasized that possessing such devices is illegal and subject to confiscation and criminal prosecution.
The public is urged to report suspicious activities, such as individuals with unusual behavior or vehicles repeatedly circling areas.
