The Department of Education (DepEd) ordered stricter energy-saving measures and implemented work-from-home Fridays for non-teaching personnel amid rising oil prices linked to tensions in the Middle East. The directive, under DepEd Memorandum No. 18, series of 2026, follows instructions from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for government offices to reduce fuel and electricity consumption. According to Education Secretary Sonny Angara, the department aims to cut electricity and fuel use by 10 to 20 percent through measures such as setting air conditioners to 24°C, turning off unused equipment, and monitoring vehicle fuel use. The agency will adopt a four-day onsite workweek from Monday to Thursday, with Fridays designated for remote work, while teachers will continue regular class schedules. DepEd assured that the cost-saving measures will not disrupt classes or end-of-school-year activities.
