The Commission on Audit (COA) has directed the Department of Education (DepEd) to return P12.3 billion from its 2023 budget due to irregularities in bidding processes and unmet project targets.
The COA report revealed that P10.1 billion was suspended, P2.2 billion was disallowed, and P7.38 million was charged for noncompliance with laws and regulations.
Despite DepEd’s acknowledgment of the issue, the funds remain unsettled, prompting COA to recommend immediate action and potential penalties for accountable officers.
Key projects flagged include the DepEd Computerization Program and the Last Mile Schools initiative, both of which showed significant delays and low completion rates.
Amid these findings, calls for accountability have grown, with lawmakers pushing for investigations into DepEd’s budget management and procurement practices.
