The Philippines and Japan signed a Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) to enhance security and maritime cooperation, marking Japan’s first such agreement with a Southeast Asian country.
The RAA, signed by top foreign and defense officials from both nations, aims to facilitate joint military training and exercises and will take effect after legislative ratification.
President Marcos hailed the agreement as a significant achievement, while Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa emphasized its importance for maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Additionally, Japan will provide the Philippines with a coastal surveillance radar system and strengthen bilateral coast guard coordination.
The agreement has received strong support from the Philippine Senate but faced opposition from some groups concerned about historical grievances and regional peace.
