DECLINING YOUNG FARMERS ENDANGER THE FUTURE OF PHILIPPINE FOOD SECURITY — DAR

Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Secretary Conrado Estrella warned that the declining number of young farmers threatens the Philippines’ food security.

During a budget hearing, he revealed that the average age of Filipino farmers is around 60, mostly senior citizens.

To address this, the DAR plans to attract younger generations by awarding land titles under Executive Order No. 75 and prioritizing agriculture graduates as agrarian reform beneficiaries.

Secretary Estrella emphasized the need to encourage youth involvement in farming to sustain the country’s food security.

Lawmakers also called on DAR to tackle farmers’ debts, which discourage young people from pursuing agriculture.
