Voters in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, kicked off Election Day with a tie, as both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump received three votes each. This tiny hamlet, known for its tradition of being the first to cast ballots at midnight, mirrored the neck-and-neck race for the White House.
The race is too close to call, with national polls showing similar tight results. As the votes were cast, a crowd of journalists watched as the national anthem was played on an accordion.
Dixville Notch’s polling station is open at midnight and closes once all registered voters have cast their ballots—a law reserved for towns with fewer than 100 residents. In 2020, they unanimously voted for Joe Biden, making it a rare occurrence in this long-standing tradition that dates back to 1960.
This time, the hamlet surprised many by not backing Trump, with three voters opting for a change. Back in January, Dixville Notch made headlines when they gave a surprising unanimous victory to Nikki Haley in the New Hampshire primary, although she soon dropped out due to Trump’s overwhelming lead.
