The Department of Agriculture (DA) is launching a P3-billion initiative to build 99 cold storage facilities across the country to improve the shelf life of fruits, vegetables, and high-value crops, ensuring price stability and food security.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel highlighted that the facilities will use renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, and integrate cost-efficient designs.
This project, part of the DA’s logistics master plan, aims to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance the agricultural supply chain.
President Marcos approved the use of P1.5 billion from unprogrammed funds in 2024, with another P1.5 billion allocated for 2025.
The facilities will include large and small cold storage units, which will be managed in coordination with local government units and farmers’ cooperatives to stabilize supply and prices.
