The Department of Agriculture (DA) has temporarily suspended the issuance of sanitary and phytosanitary import clearances for several mackerel and scad species following reports of import permit misuse.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. issued the directive under Memorandum Order 38 to prevent misdeclaration and diversion of fish shipments, which have disrupted supply and trade fairness.
The suspension covers fish staples like alumahan (mackerel) and galunggong (scad), which are widely consumed by Filipino households.
Tiu Laurel clarifies that this is not an import ban but a regulatory measure to protect local markets, stabilize prices, and ensure compliance.
The DA said the suspension will be lifted after a full investigation and is consistent with President Marcos Jr.’s push for food safety and sustainable livelihoods.
