Hackers based in China recently attempted to breach the websites and email systems of the Philippine government, including the personal website of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
However, their efforts were unsuccessful, according to an official from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
The hacking attempts took place in January and targeted various government agencies, including the DICT and the National Coast Watch.
While the DICT is not attributing this to any state, the DICT confirmed that the hackers were traced back to China using internet protocol addresses and were found to be using the services of Chinese state-owned Unicom.
The thwarted cyber attacks occurred amid heightened tensions between the Philippines and China, primarily due to territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
Moreover, the Philippines is currently working on a five-year cybersecurity strategy to strengthen its defenses against cyber attacks and digital crimes.
