The Baguio City government is intensifying its crackdown on illegal garbage disposal and littering, warning violators of possible criminal charges and jail time under national environmental laws.
Mayor Benjamin Magalong ordered the General Services Office and the City Environment and Parks Management Office to gather evidence against those dumping waste, especially in waterways, during the rainy season.
Recent flooding was worsened by clogged drainage systems caused by improperly discarded trash, particularly in flood-prone areas like City Camp Lagoon.
To address this, the city has installed garbage steel traps in waterways to trace the source of the waste.
The mayor emphasized that harsher penalties, including jail terms of up to 20 years, will be enforced to protect public health and the environment.
