The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will intensify its monitoring of social media for the 2025 midterm elections, introducing strict measures to ensure transparency and accountability.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia announced that all candidates and their campaign teams must register their social media accounts by December 30, 2024, or risk disqualification.
The Comelec will use its new Cybersecurity and Campaign Monitoring Unit to track online activities, ensuring adherence to election rules and campaign spending limits.
Garcia emphasized the need to prevent misinformation and the misuse of anonymous accounts, stressing that the poll body aims to create a level playing field.
Comelec is also partnering with social media platforms to monitor campaign-related content and streamline the detection of violations.
