COMELEC SUSPENDS VOTER REGISTRATION PENDING BARANGAY TERM EXTENSION BILL

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has suspended the nationwide voter registration originally scheduled for July 1–11, moving it to late October after the Bangsamoro parliamentary elections.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the move anticipates a possible law extending the term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials, which would push the next BSKE to November 2026.

Despite the suspension, Comelec will continue election preparations, including procurement, to avoid delays in case the proposed measure is not signed or is challenged in court.

Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez urged President Marcos to sign House Bill 11287 to avoid excessive election spending and allow barangay officials longer terms aligned with other local officials.

The bill, backed by House leaders, also seeks to impose term limits and move BSKE polls to every six years starting May 2029.
