COMELEC SHIFTS FOCUS TO 2025 ELECTIONS AFTER PEOPLE’S INITIATIVE SETBACK

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has shifted its focus to the 2025 midterm elections following the suspension of proceedings related to the people’s initiative for Charter change.

Chairman George Garcia announced that Comelec aims to prioritize preparations for the upcoming elections.

To highlight the significance of voting, Comelec declared February 12 as National Voter’s Day, coinciding with the commencement of voter registration in the Philippines, which will run until September 30.

A symbolic ceremony is scheduled on February 12 at Kalayaan Islands in Palawan.

Voter registration for overseas Filipinos is already underway and will continue until September 30.

Comelec also introduced the “Register Anywhere Program” in collaboration with various entities to facilitate voter registration, including reactivation of voter status, transfer of registration, and correction of voter information.

The poll body targets to register 3 million new voters in this initiative.
