The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has encouraged media organizations to organize senatorial debates for the May mid-term elections, aiming to inform voters about candidates and their positions on key issues.
Comelec Chair George Garcia assured media outlets of the commission’s support, stating, “We will give them the go signal.”
While there is no law mandating candidates to participate in debates, Garcia suggested exploring a resolution to include it in Comelec rules.
The poll body last held election debates during the May 2022 elections.
Garcia emphasized the importance of debates in fostering informed electoral choices.
