COMELEC: 5-YEAR BARANGAY TERM CAN START WITH 2026 ELECTIONS

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia said the proposed five-year term for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials can be implemented without postponing the elections scheduled for November 2, 2026

An alternative proposal discussed in the Senate would allow the Barangay and SK Elections (BSKE) to proceed as planned, with the longer term applying to officials elected in the November polls.

The Senate Committee on Local Government, however, has endorsed a proposal to postpone the BSKE from November 2026 to November 2028, followed by elections every five years.

Garcia noted that the filing of certificates of candidacy is scheduled from September 28 to October 5

He also said Comelec has already spent around P8 billion in preparations for the 2026 elections.
