Senate President Francis Escudero has expressed optimism about the approval of the anti-discrimination bill compared to the sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) bill, citing potential challenges for the latter unless proponents agree to amendments.
Currently, five SOGIE and anti-discrimination bills are pending at the Senate, with Senator Risa Hontiveros highlighting the bipartisan support for the SOGIE bill.
However, Escudero’s remarks indicate a potential uphill battle for the SOGIE bill in the Senate, while the UN Population Fund has urged Congress to pass the SOGIE bill as a crucial step towards a more inclusive Philippines.
