CHINESE RESEARCH VESSEL SIGHTED CLOSE TO PALAWAN WATERS

A Chinese marine research vessel, the Haiyang Dizhi 12 Hao, has been spotted conducting survey work just 27 nautical miles from the southern coast of Palawan, accompanied by six militia ships named Qiong Sansha Yu.

Defense expert Ray Powell reported this activity, highlighting that surveying within another country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) requires permission under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

This development follows the withdrawal of the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Teresa Magbanua from Escoda Shoal due to repeated harassment from Chinese vessels, leading to significant repairs for multiple PCG ships.

The Philippine Coast Guard has allocated millions for repairs on its damaged vessels, which are essential for maritime patrols and humanitarian missions.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy welcomed the delivery of two new missile-capable Fast Attack Interdiction Crafts, enhancing its maritime capabilities amidst rising tensions in the South China Sea.
