CHINA EXPANDS ISLAND-BUILDING IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

China is building what could become its largest artificial island in the South China Sea, with reclamation at Antelope Reef in the Paracel Islands reaching about 1,490 acres, according to a report by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative.

Satellite imagery indicates the site could rival Mischief Reef and support a 9,000-foot runway along with military infrastructure such as surveillance and missile systems.

The project marks Beijing’s first major island-building activity in the region since 2017, signaling renewed expansion in contested waters.

Analysts say the development could extend China’s operational reach closer to Vietnam and enhance its naval and air capabilities.

While not expected to drastically shift the balance of power, the move underscores China’s continued efforts to strengthen its presence in disputed territories.
