The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) admitted struggling to align higher education programs with labor market demands during a hearing by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (Edcom 2).
Many challenges identified in the 1990s, such as the mismatch between college programs and jobs and low accreditation rates, remain unresolved.
CHED Chair Shirley Agrupis highlighted the lack of centralized labor market data and structural issues hampering the agency’s effectiveness.
Edcom 2 members, including Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, called for CHEd to focus more on quality standards and educational planning rather than administrative approvals.
Lawmakers also suggested reviewing and updating CHED’s mandate to better address current and future education and labor needs.
