President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Cesar Chavez as the new secretary of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), replacing Cheloy Garafil, who is now heading the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO).
Chavez, a former broadcaster, took his oath on Thursday and pledged to strengthen government communications and fight fake news by designating fact-check officers across state media.
He emphasized that communicating government policies clearly is the responsibility of the entire administration.
Chavez also plans to focus on issues such as the West Philippine Sea.
Garafil, meanwhile, will lead MECO, which handles Philippines-Taiwan relations.
