Marikina City launched its “Car-Free Sundays” program to encourage a healthier and more active lifestyle among residents.
Every Sunday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., a stretch of Gil Fernando Avenue will be closed to vehicles, creating a pedestrian- and bike-friendly space for walking, jogging, cycling, Zumba, and other recreational activities.
Mayor Marcelino Teodoro emphasized the initiative’s goal of providing a safe, clean environment for families and friends to bond and engage in physical activities.
He also highlighted the environmental benefits of the program, including cleaner air and reduced noise due to fewer vehicles on the road.
Other cities like Manila, Makati, and Quezon also have similar car-free Sunday programs.
