Officials of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) are advocating for the postponement of the first regional parliamentary elections scheduled for May 2025, following a Supreme Court ruling that removed Sulu province from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
The BTA believes that delaying the elections would allow them to amend the Bangsamoro Autonomy Act 58, which governs parliamentary districts and ensures equitable representation for the remaining territories.
BTA member Michael Midtimbang has filed resolutions requesting changes to redistribute the seven parliamentary seats previously assigned to Sulu.
Additionally, Midtimbang is urging the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to extend the filing period for certificates of candidacy to accommodate these changes.
In light of the Supreme Court’s decision, Comelec has already adjusted the filing period from October 1-8 to November 4-9.
