Senator Nancy Binay has called on the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) to reassess the current food poverty threshold of ₱64 a day, arguing that it no longer reflects the true cost of living.
Binay highlighted concerns about poor nutrition and the rising rates of kidney disease, suggesting that cheap, unhealthy diets are a contributing factor.
She pointed out that Nutribun, a nutritious bread designed to combat malnutrition, is still unaffordable at ₱40. Binay urged Neda and the Philippine Statistics Authority to further investigate and adjust the food poverty threshold.
Meanwhile, the Senate is focusing on budget allocations for 2025 to better address food poverty issues.
