BILL SEEKS PHILHEALTH COVERAGE FOR MOTHERS’ POSTPARTUM MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS

Parañaque City Rep. Brian Yamsuan is pushing for mandatory PhilHealth coverage for the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of postpartum mental health conditions under House Bill No. 8617.

The bill seeks to cover postpartum blues, depression, anxiety, and psychosis through a dedicated PhilHealth benefit package.

It also directs the Department of Health and PhilHealth to launch a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and inform mothers about available support services.

Yamsuan said stigma, fear of judgment, and treatment costs often prevent mothers from seeking professional help.

Studies cited in the proposal found that many Filipino women experience depressive symptoms during pregnancy or after childbirth.
