The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has called for intensified efforts against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUUF) to ensure sustainable management of the Philippines’ aquatic resources.
BFAR spokesperson Nazario Briguera highlighted issues like commercial fishing vessels encroaching on municipal waters and using illegal gear, which contribute to declining fish catches and ocean degradation.
The agency has reported PHP 5.35 billion in losses from IUUF between 2022 and 2023 and has introduced the FishSHIELDS mobile app to aid in monitoring and enforcement.
BFAR is collaborating with local governments and other agencies to combat illegal fishing and invites the public to participate in activities for the 61st Fish Conservation Week.
The BFAR-Central Office is open for public visits until September 20.
