The Philippine government is set to acquire additional fighter jets for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) in response to recent harassment by Chinese aircraft, according to Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr.
He emphasized the need to bolster the country’s air defense amid ongoing security issues in the West Philippine Sea, especially following an incident where Chinese jets interfered with a PAF patrol over Scarborough Shoal.
Teodoro reaffirmed the commitment of the Department of National Defense (DND) to enhancing territorial defense through the acquisition of multi-role fighters.
His remarks came after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) filed a diplomatic protest over the incident.
Additionally, Teodoro praised the PAF contingent for their successful participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2024 in Australia, highlighting the importance of continued joint exercises and international collaboration for strengthening national defense.
